Engineering Leadership and Innovation Certificate

Students participating in the Engineering Leadership and Innovation certificate will acquire a developed knowledge and critical understanding of the key concepts and skills in management, leadership and innovation. Students will get the opportunity to learn how the fields of engineering and business intersect and how principles of business and management can enhance the implementation of engineering technologies.

Admissions and Eligibility

The certificate is open to Engineering students in their second or third year. To be eligible, students must:

  • Obtain a weighted average (YWA) of 70% in their previous year in Engineering
  • Have no failed courses in their previous year of Engineering 
  • Complete complete an online application form via Kuali (Including a $100 application fee)

  • Students enrolled in the Integrated Engineering program are not eligible for this certificate.
  • Admission is not guaranteed and space is limited.

Program Structure

This certificate program is provided by the John M. Thompson Centre for Engineering Leadership and Innovation to help students build skills and understanding for life after graduation. The program enables students to acquire tools that recruiters desire for new hires, while also providing them with official documentation through Western Engineering. Upon completion, students will be able to access and view the newly earned certificate status directly on their transcripts.

Requirements

To successfully meet the requirements of the Engineering Leadership and Innovation Certificate, students must complete the following in addition to their BESc degree:

  • 1.0 credits from the following required courses
  • 1.0 credits from the following choices

Please note that 1.0 credit is equal to 2 courses worth 0.5 credits (half-term) or 1 course worth 1.0 credits (full-term).

  • Any of the 6 listed ‘ELI’ courses above may also count as a 0.5 Non-Technical Elective.
