Our students stand ready to improve the automotive and mobility sector in Ontario!

Through the Automotive Innovation Challenge (AIC), we are helping the next generation in the automotive and mobility sector develop practical, real-world experience that will support their career development.

Are you a student in the Faculty of Engineering or Faculty of Science looking to solve real-world challenges in the automotive and mobility sector? Take part in the Western Engineering Automotive Innovation Challenge in partnership with the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network and General Motors.

In teams of four, you will engage in a collaborative and hands-on experience to develop innovative solutions to current issues facing the automotive industry, particularly in areas like autonomous mobility and smart transportation systems using programming and AI based data analysis . You’ll have an opportunity to enhance your technical expertise and improve your communication and presentation skills. All competitors are eligible to have this experience recorded on their co-curricular record.

Competition Details:

Date: March 7-9, 2025 

A weekend intensive format works well for student competitions because it fosters focus, collaboration, and urgency. With a limited time frame, students stay highly engaged, work efficiently under pressure, and experience real-world problem-solving dynamics. It also minimizes scheduling conflicts, making it easier for participants to commit fully without long-term disruptions to their studies. This is an in person competition

Location: Amit Chakma Engineering Building

Refreshments & lunch on Saturday & Sunday will be provided to participants. 

Networking: The GM talent & acquisition team will be on site to network with competition participants and provide information on career opportunities. 

Eligibility:

Open to Undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering & Science.

Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. Students will work in teams, using programming and AI based data analysis to develop solutions in one of 3 problem areas

Students will work in teams of 4. Interdisciplinary teams are encouraged. 

Students can register as part of a team, or as an individual. The organizers will try to match individual students together to form a team.

Competition Categories: 

There are 3 competition categies. Teams can register for one category. 

Students will work in teams, using programming and AI based data analysis to develop solutions in one of 3 problem areas. The detailed problem statements will be launched to all competitors on March 7, 2025 at the opening ceremony. 

Problem 1: Smart Perception: Enhancing Autonomous Vehicle Safety in Urban Environments 

Problem 2: The parking puzzle: Unlocking Urban Mobility

Problem 3: Hidden Insights: A Privacy Preserving Approach for Safe Navigation

 

Prizes: 

$1000 cash prize for the winning team in each competition category. 

Winning teams will be invited to GM in Markham, Ontario to pitch their solutions to GM leaders. Followed by a tour of a GM lab to see how automotive engineers develop products, and visit the CTC McLaughlin Advance Technology Track for an EV & Super Cruise experience.

All competitors will be eligible for co-curricular record recognition.
