Taxes

Students may want to consider buying bonds or RRSP's to reduce the amount of taxes paid while working. If a student’s income is lower when they return to school these investments can be cashed out at a lower tax rate.

Medical Plans

Students on a Long Term Co-op have access to the university Purple Care coverage, if not opted-out. For more information, please here to contact them for support.

All international students participating in Long Term Co-op, please click here for UHIP information.

Vacation Policy

Students are invited to speak with their individual employer about earned holidays (if any) while on placement. Studentsare welcome to confirm how many they may be entitled to and if there are any restrictions regulating when it can be taken.

Overtime Policy

Students are invited to speak with their employers directly related to how they are to be reimbursed for overtime hours, every employer may have different policies.

PEO

Students can gain credit for work done while on co-op to be given towards the licensing requirement for work during your Long Term Co-op. Learn more

Scholarship

Students who qualify to receive a continuing university scholarship in the academic year in which they participate in Long Term Co-op will be permitted to defer the receipt of the scholarship for one year. It is the student’s responsibility to inform the Engineering Career Services Office of their scholarship, and that it needs to be deferred. The deferral will be looked after by the finance office.

Student Cards

Students are not eligible for the bus pass, or free access to the recreation centre on campus, as ancillary fees are not paid while out on placement. Long Term Co-op students can pay a discounted fee to utilize the Western Student Recreation Centre on campus, see here

Tuition Fee

When completing a Long Term Co-op students will be extending their program and will therefore be scheduled to return to class full-time with a different cohort of students. Please note that because of this, tuition fees will be reflective of the new cohort that the student joins which may differ from previous years.
