Dr. Tianlong (Taylor) Liu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Western University and the Principal Investigator of the SustainAI Group. His research lies at the intersection of AI and sustainable process engineering, with a focus on developing AI-enhanced process simulation, physics-informed machine learning (PIML) models, and data-driven optimization and control strategies for industrial and environmental systems.

Dr. Liu’s research addresses pressing challenges in wastewater treatment, oil refinary, waste-to-energy solutions, and process control & optimization. His work has led to several impactful implementations, including the first industrial-scale retrofit MFC system in Canada for sustainable wastewater treatment and energy recovery. Dr. Liu’s research has been supported by a range of competitive funding programs, including NSERC Discovery, NSERC Alliance, Mitacs Accelerate, Natural Resources Canada, and internal funding from Western University. These resources have enabled the development of impactful, interdisciplinary projects at the interface of AI, sustainable engineering, and real-world implementation.

In addition to his research, Dr. Liu plays an active role in academic service and leadership. He has servered as a guest Editor and active reviewer for multiple international journals, and participated in organizing numbers of national and international conferences. He chairs the AI in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Committee at Western, co-organizes the AI Seminar Series, and serves on curriculum advisory committees for Western AISE program. He currently teaches three courses at Western, CBE 4427/CBE9133 AI in Chemical Engineering, CBE 2291 Computational Methods for Engineers, and ES 1050 Foundations of Engineering Practice (Studio Instructor).

Committed to mentorship and equity, Dr. Liu supervises students across all levels—from undergraduate to PhD—while fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and interdisciplinary training environment. Through the SustainAI group, Dr. Liu seeks to empower the next generation of engineers to apply AI for impactful, real-world solutions in sustainable technology and environmental resilience.
