Welcome to Western Engineering Outreach

Western Engineering Outreach started in 1990 with Discovery Western, a four week summer camp for elementary school students. Western Engineering Outreach has since grown as a multifaceted organization managed by the Faculty of Engineering at Western University dedicated to empowering children and youth by sparking their curiosity and confidence in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Western Engineering Outreach offers a suite of fun, hands-on programming for children and youth from kindergarten to Grade 12, ranging from in-school workshops to summer camps to weekend clubs. Each year, programs are dedicated to children and youth under-represented in STEM studies and careers including women and girls, Indigenous youth, Black youth, 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, rural youth, newcomers to Canada and youth from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Western Engineering Outreach believes that STEM is for everyone and actively works to remove barriers to participation in STEM.

Western Engineering Outreach additionally offers workshops and resources for educators to support their vital role in shaping the student experience.

Each year, Western Engineering Outreach hires dedicated high-school and postsecondary student instructors who are passionate about sharing their love of STEM to deliver programs.

Western Engineering Outreach Programs

Western Engineering Outreach offers exciting programs for children and youth from kindergarten to Grade12 as well as partners with community organizations to reach as many aspiring minds as possible. These programs aim to inspire and empower students with engineering skills. Learn more about Our Programs and Community Partnerships.

In-School Workshops

Throughout the year we offer workshops for elementary and secondary schools. These workshops are a fun and interactive way for your class to cover the Ontario Science and Technology curriculum requirements while exploring engineering. To learn more about the workshops we offer check out our Workshop Information Page.

Summer Camps

During the months of July and August we run Discovery Western Summer Camp, a dynamic summer camp program promoting science and engineering through hands-on activities, tours, demonstrations, crafts and games. Our summer camp program is for children in senior kindergarten to Grade 6. Check out our Summer Camp page to learn more.

We are also excited to offer the Western Engineering Summer Academy for youth in Grade 7 to 12. Check out our Western Engineering Summer Academy page to learn more.

Girls Programs

We offer a variety of programs designed to promote engineering to girls. These programs are inclusive and welcome anyone who identifies with this initiative. Each year we offer “Just for Girls” Summer Camps, a weekend Girls Club, Girl Guides Badge Days, Eng Squad (a mentorship program) as well as Go ENG Girl and Go CODE Girl. Check out our Just For Girls page to learn more and get involved!
