A co-op work permit is required for international students to complete an Engineering Co-op in Canada. To submit a co-op work permit application, international students must apply online through the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.

Follow the steps belows to obtain a co-op work permit:

Step 1: Acknowledgement Letter

  • When submitting a co-op application on Western Connect, international students must self-identity and review the MEng Co-op Work Permit Acknowledgement, where you will need to indicate your agreement with the terms outlined in the document.

Step 2: Receive Your Co-op Work Permit Letter

  • If your application is approved, you will receive a supporting letter from the Career Services team via your university email. This letter is required to apply for your co-op work permit. You **cannot** apply for the work permit online until you have received this document from our office.

Step 3: Submit your Application on the IRCC Website

  • International students must wait to receive the supporting documentation from the Career Services team before applying for the co-op work permit through the IRCC Website. Applying without this documentation may result in a rejection.

Western International can help students learn more about the application process.

  • Students can book an appointment or drop in to meet with one of the International Student Advisors.
  • Students can also email to Western International for any immigration related query at iesc@uwo.ca .
